Foreign Movies in Gainesville

Movies

The Academic Resources has a small collection of foreign-language theatrical films recommended by instructors (in Arabic, Chinese, Czech, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, plus a few items relating to ASL).
The FMR, a teaching collection located on the fourth floor of Turlington and managed by the English Department, has many older foreign films on VHS and DVD and will sometimes purchase copies of important films for FL faculty.
The UF Library has an excellent and always growing collection of DVDs of foreign films. You can use the catalogue to search for a particular title or director, or try the advanced search to look only among the videos.
In the Fall, there is a Latino Film Festival on and off campus, with extra activities.
The Hippodrome Cinema is Gainesville’s best venue for foreign (and also independent American) films. Check the listings for films from all over the world. They are also sometimes the venue for French film festivals sponsored by the France-Florida Institute or the Alliance Française . The cinema is in the Hippodrome Theater in downtown Gainesville (25 SE 2ND PLACE 375-4477).
Gainesville’s various other movie theaters often have Spanish and occasionally other foreign-language films.
If you are curious about a particular film, or you want to read more about it, you can check it in the International Movie Data Base (IMDB).
